New Orleans Man Sentenced for Bank Robbery

A 57-year-old New Orleans man has been sentenced to 12 months in prison for his role in a brazen bank robbery.

Lester Malava, 57, was sentenced by Chief Judge Kurt D. Engelhardt of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana, after being convicted of bank robbery.

According to court records, Malava robbed the Capital One Bank at 3540 St. Charles Avenue in New Orleans on August 21, 2017.

Malava was identified by the Federal Bureau of Investigation through a tip line and later turned himself in to authorities.

U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans praised the work of the FBI in investigating the case, saying it was a ‘great example of law enforcement working together to bring a perpetrator to justice.’

Assistant U.S. Attorney David Haller is in charge of the prosecution.

Malava was also ordered to repay $3,500 to Capital One Bank as part of his sentence.
