ROCKFORD, IL – Jerry Hatchett, 48, of Rockford, Illinois, will spend the next 94 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. U.S. District Judge Philip G. Reinhard handed down the sentence on July 19, 2023, bringing an end to a case stemming from a 2017 raid.
The bust, which occurred on February 6, 2017, uncovered approximately 6.4 grams of cocaine base – crack cocaine – within Hatchett’s Rockford apartment. But the initial find was just the tip of the iceberg. Investigators determined Hatchett had been peddling the drug for roughly six months, moving an estimated 378 grams of crack cocaine from his apartment to the streets.
Adding to the severity of the charges, authorities discovered four firearms within Hatchett’s residence. The plea agreement revealed a disturbing pattern: Hatchett didn’t buy the guns, he traded for them – using crack cocaine as currency. These firearms weren’t for personal protection, according to prosecutors; they were tools of the trade, meant to safeguard Hatchett’s illicit drug distribution operation.
“Holding drug dealers and those who use firearms to further their drug dealing accountable through federal prosecution is a centerpiece of Project Safe Neighborhoods,” stated a release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office. The program, a Department of Justice initiative, aims to reduce violent crime by targeting firearm offenses and drug trafficking networks. The Northern District of Illinois has heavily leaned on PSN to address a range of violent crime issues plaguing the region.
The sentencing was a joint effort, announced by Acting U.S. Attorney Morris Parsqual for the Northern District of Illinois, Christopher Amon, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago Field Division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and Winnebago County Sheriff Gary Caruana. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Michael Beckman, Robert Ladd, and Cassandra Quaglia handled the prosecution.
Hatchett’s case serves as a grim reminder that dealing drugs and wielding firearms carries significant consequences. The 7.5-year sentence isn’t just punishment for one man; it’s a message sent to anyone looking to profit from the misery of others in Rockford and beyond. The ATF continues to investigate and disrupt these dangerous operations, working alongside local law enforcement to keep weapons out of the hands of criminals.
