Mount Vernon’s Torence D. Jones, 24, is facing a harrowing future after being indicted on drug and gun-related charges by a federal grand jury in Benton, Illinois.
The defendant, charged with possession of crack cocaine with intent to distribute, faces up to 20 years behind bars, $1 million fine, and at least three years of supervised release. Jones is also accused of possessing a firearm with an altered serial number, a charge that could land him another five years in prison, $250,000 fine, and up to three years of supervised release.
The federal indictment, returned on March 3, 2015, stems from incidents occurring in Jefferson County on December 4 and 5, 2014. According to the charges, Jones intentionally possessed crack cocaine for distribution and knew that a firearm he had in his possession had its serial number removed, obliterated, or altered.
Assistant United States Attorney George Norwood is handling the case against Jones. The investigation leading to the indictment was a collaborative effort between the Joint Narcotics Unit of the Mt. Vernon Police Department and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department.
An indictment is a formal charge, and it’s important to note that under the law, Jones is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt by a jury.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against drug trafficking and gun violence in Illinois. The community remains hopeful for justice and a safer future.
