A frightening scene unfolded in Huntington, West Virginia, when Jerry T. Kinney, a 29-year-old felon, retrieved a .45 caliber pistol and chased another bar patron down an alley after an altercation in a local bar on September 5, 2013. Miraculously, no one was injured during the shooting.
According to the investigation, Kinney was previously convicted of possession of a controlled substance in November of 2002 in Detroit, Michigan, and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person in October of 2010 in the Circuit Court of Cabell County, West Virginia. Despite these convictions, Kinney’s rights to possess a firearm were not restored.
U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin announced that Kinney pleaded guilty to the federal firearm possession charge in January of 2014. United States District Court Chief Judge Robert C. Chambers handed down the sentence of four years in prison.
The investigation was conducted by the Huntington Violent Crimes and Drug Task Force, with Assistant United States Attorney Gregory McVey leading the prosecution as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods. This nationwide commitment aims to reduce gun crime in the United States by networking existing local programs targeting gun crime.
