Attempted Gun Store Burglary Lands Pittsburgh Man Behind Bars
PITTSBURGH, PA – In a brazen attempt to steal firearms, Jerwahn Atkins, 24, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has been sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment on a charge of conspiracy, announced United States Attorney Stephen R. Kaufman.
United States District Judge W. Scott Hardy imposed the sentence on Jerwahn Atkins, formerly of Buente Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15212, on an undisclosed date.
According to the court, Atkins conspired with his brothers, Jamir Atkins and Jerquay Atkins, to steal guns from federal firearm licensee Allegheny Arms and Gun Works on May 31, 2020. The trio attempted to gain entry to the gun store using a crowbar, triggering a burglary alarm. The alarm caused them to flee the scene, with Jerquay and Jerwahn leaving in the same vehicle, while Jamir departed in a separate vehicle.
The brothers then drove to the National Armory in Moon Township, another federal firearm licensee, where they again used a crowbar to pry open the door, triggering another burglary alarm. They fled the scene once more.
Before sentencing, Jerwahn Atkins requested a downward variance, but Judge Hardy denied the request, imposing an 18-month term of imprisonment, three years of supervised release, and $2,000 in restitution.
Jerquay Atkins is scheduled for sentencing on August 25, 2021, at 10:00 a.m., while Jamir Atkins is set to be sentenced on September 2, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. The law provides for a total sentence of not more than five years’ imprisonment, a term of supervised release not more than three years, and/or a $250,000 fine.
Assistant United States Attorney Brendan J. McKenna is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives conducted the investigation that led to the prosecution of Jerwahn Atkins, Jamir Atkins, and Jerquay Atkins.
