GREAT FALLS, MONTANA – A Wyoming man who attempted a brazen robbery on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation has been sentenced to 36 months in prison, a move hailed as a victory for law and order in the region. Jesse Alex Sutherland, 37, pleaded guilty in December 2024 to one count of attempted robbery.

According to court documents, on the evening of November 21, 2023, Sutherland and a co-defendant went to a remote residence on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation. The co-defendant was armed with an AR-15 style rifle. The two men met with a third person outside the home, where the co-defendant fired one round into the ground and six into the air.

They then broke into the residence, assaulted the occupants, and demanded access to a safe. Sutherland was seen on surveillance video before and after the attempted robbery, wearing the same hoodie he wore during the crime. He was arrested shortly thereafter.

The investigation was conducted by the FBI, BIA, and Fort Peck Tribes Department of Law & Justice. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kalah Paisley prosecuted the case.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in local communities. The program brings together law enforcement agencies and community organizations to prevent violence and make neighborhoods safer.
