PIERRE – A Rosebud man was sentenced to a year and a day in federal prison for failing to register as a sex offender.
Jesse Leader Charge, 29, was sentenced on May 6, 2024, after pleading guilty to the charge in February. The conviction stems from his failure to update his registration upon release from prison in September 2023.
Leader Charge was convicted of Abusive Sexual Contact in U.S. District Court on October 7, 2019, making him subject to the requirements of the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act. He was released from prison on September 11, 2023, but failed to update his registration until his arrest in December of the same year.
Leader Charge was sentenced to one year and one day in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release, and ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the U.S. Department of Justice. The initiative marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children, as well as identify and rescue victims.
The case was investigated by the U.S. Marshals Service and the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Abby Roesler prosecuting the case. Leader Charge was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
Leader Charge was indicted for Failure to Register as a Sex Offender by a federal grand jury in December 2023. He was residing in Rosebud at the time of his arrest.
