In a shocking case of exploitation, Jessica A. Teets, a 28-year-old woman from Granite City, Illinois, was sentenced to five years of probation for engaging in a scheme to defraud a healthcare program.
According to court documents, Teets submitted false and fraudulent bills for personal assistant services she claimed to have provided to her mother through the Illinois Home Services Program, a Medicaid Waiver Program designed to allow individuals to stay in their homes instead of entering a nursing home.
The investigation revealed that Teets had not performed personal assistant services for her mother for over a week prior to July 1, 2014, when her mother was found in a disturbing state by a friend. Emergency responders transported the mother to a hospital, where she was hospitalized for multiple days.
Teets had improperly billed 111 hours of services and obtained $1,312.05 in payments for services not performed. As a result, she was ordered to pay $1,292.62 in restitution to the Home Services Program.
The case was investigated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services – Office of Inspector General, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Illinois State Police – Medicaid Fraud Control Bureau, and the Wood River, Illinois Police Department.
Assistant United States Attorney Adam E. Hanna prosecuted the case.
