LAS VEGAS – A stunning blow to digital piracy was dealt yesterday as five Nevada men, including a German national, were sentenced for operating Jetflicks, the largest illegal television streaming service in the United States.
“The defendants operated Jetflicks, an illegal paid streaming service that outstripped all licensed streaming services with its extensive library of television episodes,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General Matthew R. Galeotti of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division. “This operation raked in millions in criminal profits, while leaving legitimate content owners high and dry.
“Digital crimes are not victimless,” U.S. Attorney Sigal Chattah for the District of Nevada emphasized. “The losses to copyright owners were in the millions, and these sentences reflect our dedication to combating intellectual property crime.”
The FBI’s Assistant Director Jose A. Perez added, “These individuals not only robbed content creators but also undermined our economy and legal system. The consequences are clear: illegal actions have real-world repercussions.”
Steven J. Jensen, Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI Washington Field Office, noted, “Every act of piracy has a victim. Our investigation demonstrates that we will pursue those who infringe on intellectual property rights and steal from hardworking creators.”
The convictions follow a 14-day trial where Kristopher Lee Dallmann, 42; Peter H. Huber, 67; Jared Edward Jaurequi, 44; Felipe Garcia, 43; and Douglas M. Courson, 65, were found guilty of conspiracy to commit copyright infringement. Sentences varied from time served plus home confinement to three years’ probation with prison terms.
Jetflicks was an online subscription service headquartered in Las Vegas that offered copyrighted television programs without permission. The site claimed to have access to 183,285 different episodes, far surpassing legitimate streaming services.
