Hong Kong Tycoon Found Guilty in High-Profile National Security Case
A Hong Kong court has found Jimmy Lai, a prominent Hong Kong businessman and media tycoon, guilty in a high-profile national security case. The verdict was delivered on March 22, 2024 at the West Kowloon Magistrates’ Courts in Hong Kong.
Lai, the founder of Next Digital, which publishes the Apple Daily newspaper, was charged with collusion with a foreign country or external elements to endanger national security under the national security law imposed by China in 2020.
The case against Lai has been closely watched by human rights groups and international observers, who have expressed concerns about the erosion of press freedom and the rule of law in Hong Kong.
