CLOVIS, NM – Jimmy Roberts Guillen, 59, is facing serious federal charges after allegedly torching both a Lowe’s and a Walmart in Clovis, New Mexico on September 3, 2023. The fires, which caused significant damage, are now the subject of a federal investigation led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
According to a federal indictment unsealed Wednesday, Guillen attempted to damage and destroy the Lowe’s store located on North Prince Street. He didn’t stop there. Hours later, the indictment alleges, Guillen moved on to the Walmart, also on North Prince Street, and successfully damaged and destroyed property by means of fire.
U.S. Attorney Alexander M.M. Uballez and ATF Special Agent in Charge Jeffrey C. Boshek II announced Guillen’s appearance in federal court. He is currently being held pending a detention hearing, meaning a judge will determine if he poses a flight risk or danger to the community.
The indictment is a crucial step, but it’s important to remember that it’s just an allegation at this point. Guillen is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. However, if convicted on the charges of attempted arson and arson, he faces a steep penalty: up to 20 years in federal prison.
The investigation wasn’t a solo effort. The ATF worked closely with a coalition of local law enforcement agencies, including the Clovis Police Department, Roosevelt County Sheriff’s Office, New Mexico State Fire Marshal’s Office, Ninth Judicial District Attorney’s Office, Curry County Sheriff’s Office, and Portales Police Department. Their combined resources were essential in building the case against Guillen.
