Tampa Attorney Sentenced to Prison for Hiding Drug Proceeds
Tampa attorney Joe Manuel Gonzalez, 66, has been sentenced to 10 months in federal prison for his role in structuring financial transactions to avoid currency reporting requirements.
U.S. District Judge Steven D. Merryday handed down the sentence on [date], also ordering Gonzalez to pay a $15,000 fine as part of his supervised release.
Gonzalez pleaded guilty on August 24, 2016, to charges stemming from his involvement in helping a confidential source and undercover DEA agent launder proceeds from a marijuana grow house operation.
According to court documents, Gonzalez, who specialized in financial and tax matters, established a fictitious trust and bank account for the confidential source and undercover agent. He advised them on how to set up and make deposits into bank accounts to avoid detection by law enforcement.
The scheme involved breaking up large cash deposits into smaller transactions to avoid triggering currency reporting requirements. On two occasions, Gonzalez structured the cash provided to him by the undercover agent, totaling approximately $30,000-$50,000 per month from the marijuana operation.
The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Josephine W. Thomas.
Gonzalez’s actions highlight the ease with which some individuals attempt to hide illicit proceeds. The sentence serves as a reminder of the consequences of such actions and the importance of transparency in financial transactions.
