Joel Antonio Alonzo, a 19-year-old Honduran national, has been charged with assaulting a federal security officer and attempting to seize their firearm during a chaotic scene at 26 Federal Plaza in New York City.
The incident occurred on June 6, 2025, when Alonzo allegedly arrived at the Immigration Court and began exhibiting disruptive behavior, forcing his way ahead of others and tossing papers at service window personnel.
As federal protective security officers attempted to assist Alonzo, he suddenly lunged at one officer and grabbed their loaded service firearm, attempting to pull it from its holster. However, due to the quick actions and training of the officers, Alonzo was unsuccessful and was immediately restrained.
Joel Antonio Alonzo is charged with one count of assaulting an officer of the U.S. using a deadly or dangerous weapon, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
The case is being handled by the Office’s General Crimes Unit, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Joe Zabel in charge of the prosecution.
Alonzo’s arrest and charges are a stark reminder of the importance of maintaining safety and security in federal facilities and the communities they serve.
U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton and Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin emphasized the seriousness of the allegations and the need to hold individuals accountable for threatening the safety of federal officers and civilians.
