Two East Hartford men are facing federal charges in a grim sex trafficking case involving a minor, marking the latest blow in a widening crackdown on underground exploitation networks in Connecticut. Joel Lindsay, 22, also known as “Joey Guapo,” and Joseph Pina, 23, were indicted by a federal grand jury in New Haven on charges tied to the recruitment and sexual exploitation of a child.
Lindsay, a Jamaican national, was arrested today and is currently held in federal custody. Pina, already locked up on unrelated state charges, now faces federal escalation as investigators connect dots in what prosecutors call a calculated operation to profit from a vulnerable underage victim. Authorities say the pair worked in tandem to recruit, entice, and transport the minor for commercial sex acts as far back as October 2019.
The indictment levels one count of conspiracy to commit sex trafficking of a minor against both men—a charge punishable by up to life in prison. Lindsay faces an additional count of substantive sex trafficking of a minor, which carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years and a maximum of life behind bars. The charges expose the brutal mechanics of a crime that has plagued urban corridors across the Northeast.
U.S. Attorney John H. Durham, overseeing the case for the District of Connecticut, emphasized that while the charges are serious, they remain allegations. “An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt,” Durham stated. “Each defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.”
The investigation was led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s New Haven Division, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge David Sundberg. Agents combed through digital trails, witness statements, and physical evidence to build the case over several years, highlighting the tenacity required to confront hidden networks of exploitation.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarala V. Nagala is prosecuting the case. As the legal process unfolds, the indictment sends a stark message: those who prey on children will face the full weight of federal law, no matter how deeply they think they’re buried in the shadows.
