John C. Vastis, 54, of Lakemoor, Illinois, was sentenced today to 13 years in federal prison for accessing child pornography involving a prepubescent minor and coercing underage boys to produce and send sexually explicit images of themselves. The former middle school teacher stood silent in a Chicago federal courtroom as U.S. District Judge John J. Tharp Jr. delivered a sentence that signals zero tolerance for predators who exploit children online.
Vastis began communicating with one of his victims in 2013—initially over the internet—and quickly escalated the conversation into overtly sexual territory. For nearly a year, he manipulated the minor into recording and transmitting graphic photos and videos, many of which showed the child’s private areas. The digital trail left behind by Vastis painted a damning picture of premeditated abuse, grooming, and possession of illicit material.
In a plea agreement filed last year, Vastis admitted to one count of accessing child pornography with intent to view. He confessed to watching videos showing another minor, a prepubescent boy, performing a sex act on an adult male. The images were traced back to file-sharing networks and cloud storage accounts linked directly to Vastis. Federal investigators uncovered multiple layers of digital deception, including encrypted messaging and masked IP addresses.
Authorities arrested Vastis in August 2014 following a coordinated investigation led by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). The probe was conducted under Operation Predator, HSI’s global initiative targeting child sexual exploitation. The Lakemoor Police Department, Buffalo Grove Police Department, and Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office assisted in the case, which revealed no evidence of abuse directed at students at Meridian Middle School, where Vastis once taught.
The school district, Aptakisic-Tripp District 102 in Buffalo Grove, fully cooperated with law enforcement. Officials confirmed that while Vastis had access to children in a position of trust, there were no allegations linking him to any student exploitation. Still, the betrayal of that trust echoes through the quiet suburbs where parents sent their kids to learn—not to become targets of predators hiding in plain sight.
Zachary T. Fardon, then U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, and James M. Gibbons, Special Agent-in-Charge of HSI Chicago, announced the sentence. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Streicker prosecuted the case.
