Daniel Santiago, Child Pornography Distribution, Illinois 2024

Daniel Santiago, a 25-year-old from Arlington Heights, Illinois, was sentenced today to five years in federal prison for receiving and distributing sexually explicit images of a ten-year-old girl he met online. The conviction marks the end of a years-long investigation into Santiago’s digital trail of child exploitation, where he not only consumed but actively shared graphic content involving minors.

In a series of online conversations in 2014, Santiago attempted to manipulate the young girl into engaging in sexually explicit conduct. He succeeded in receiving at least one image depicting the child’s private area. That image was later uploaded by Santiago to a file-sharing application, making it accessible to others in online networks known for trading child pornography.

Santiago pleaded guilty in August to one count of knowingly receiving child pornography, a charge that carried significant weight due to the age of the victim and the nature of the material. U.S. District Judge Robert W. Gettleman handed down the sentence in federal court in Chicago, emphasizing the predatory behavior and the permanence of digital exploitation.

According to his written plea agreement, Santiago used the file-sharing platform to store and distribute a collection of approximately 2,210 child pornography images and 25 videos. The stash included depictions of prepubescent minors and material involving sadistic and masochistic conduct, underscoring the severity and breadth of his criminal activity.

“The evidence shows that Santiago actively sought out child pornography,” argued Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Jared C. Jodrey in the government’s sentencing memorandum. “The images that are the subject of the charges in this case concern a ten-year-old girl whom Santiago exploited.” Jodrey emphasized that Santiago’s actions perpetuated the ongoing victimization of children.

The investigation was led by the FBI’s Child Exploitation Task Force (CETF), part of the Innocence Lost National Initiative targeting child sex trafficking and online predators. The Chicago-based task force includes agents from the FBI, Chicago Police Department, Cook County Sheriff’s Office, and Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office. The case was prosecuted by Jodrey, and the sentence was announced by Zachary T. Fardon, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, and FBI Special Agent in Charge Michael J. Anderson.
