Donovan Heidenreich, Child Pornography Trafficking and Possession, Illinois 2017

Donovan Heidenreich, 25, of Rockford, Illinois, was sentenced today to 12 years in federal prison for trafficking and possessing child pornography, marking the end of a federal case tied to the online exchange of horrific sexual images of minors.

U.S. District Judge Philip G. Reinhard handed down the sentence, which will be followed by 15 years of court-supervised release. Heidenreich pleaded guilty on March 13, 2020, to two counts: transportation of child pornography via the internet and possession of child pornography.

Court documents reveal Heidenreich used the KIK chat application to distribute depraved material. On September 25, 2017, he transmitted a video file showing a male child under 18 engaged in sexually explicit conduct to another user. The exchange was not isolated—he admitted to trading images with others in a sick barter system for more illicit content.

During a subsequent search, authorities found a laptop in Heidenreich’s possession containing over 600 images of children subjected to sexually explicit acts. The November 28, 2017, discovery painted a damning picture of a predator immersed in child sexual abuse material.

The case was led by John R. Lausch, Jr., U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, and Emmerson Buie, Jr., Special Agent-in-Charge of the FBI’s Chicago Field Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael D. Love prosecuted the case, calling Heidenreich’s actions a deliberate assault on the most vulnerable.

Today’s sentence sends a hard message: those who traffic in child exploitation will face severe federal consequences. Heidenreich now begins a 12-year prison term, but his crimes will haunt victims long after his release.
