A Texas pharmacist has been sentenced to 72 months in federal prison for his role in a large-scale oxycodone trafficking operation in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. John Christopher Esparza, 29, of Granbury, Texas, was sentenced on May 6, 2016, by U.S. District Judge Marcia Crone.
According to court documents, Esparza, who was the pharmacist in charge of Trinity Pharmacy on Rosemeade Parkway in Carrollton, Texas, conspired with another individual to distribute and possess oxycodone from November 2012 to September 2015. During this time, Esparza sold large quantities of the highly addictive painkiller to the individual, resulting in a street value of approximately $2.9 million.
The investigation, which was conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration – Dallas Field Division Tactical Diversion Squad, the Texas Department of Public Safety, the Texas Board of Pharmacy, and the McKinney Police Department, revealed that a review of the pharmacy’s inventory records suggested a large amount of oxycodone was unaccounted for. Esparza was indicted by a federal grand jury on September 10, 2015, after the investigation uncovered evidence of his involvement in the trafficking operation.
Esparza pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute and possess oxycodone on January 5, 2016. He was sentenced to 72 months in federal prison, marking a significant blow to the opioid epidemic that has plagued the United States in recent years.
