A 50-year-old Auburn man was sentenced to 27 months in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm, a crime that puts public safety at risk.
John Edwards, 50, of Auburn, was sentenced on March 13, 2023 by U.S. District Judge John A. Woodcock, Jr. after pleading guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm.
The crime occurred on November 14, 2020 when an Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office deputy responded to a report of a male walking outside a residence shooting a firearm. Upon arrival, the deputy observed Edwards holding a shotgun and firing it. The deputy gave multiple commands before Edwards dropped the weapon and put his hands above his head.
Edwards’ criminal history includes a 2015 Ohio conviction for felony domestic violence, making it a federal crime for him to possess a firearm.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office investigated the case, which is part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative.
The initiative aims to reduce violent crime through community engagement, prevention and intervention, focused and strategic enforcement, and accountability.
Edwards will also serve three years of supervised release after his prison sentence.
