BRONX, NEW YORK – A Bronx man has been charged with attacking a United States Postal Service (USPS) mail carrier with a deadly and dangerous weapon.
According to the allegations, on July 16, 2025, at approximately 12:50 p.m., John Garcia, 49, of the Bronx, attacked a uniformed, on-duty USPS mail carrier with a sharp object, slashing the victim’s head and right ear, causing multiple deep lacerations that required hospitalization.
The victim, whose identity has not been released, was hospitalized after the attack.
Garcia is charged with one count of assaulting an officer of the U.S. using a deadly or dangerous weapon, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
The maximum potential sentence in this case is prescribed by Congress and provided here for informational purposes only, as any sentencing of the defendant will be determined by a judge.
The charges contained in the Complaint are merely accusations, and Garcia is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
This case is being handled by the Office’s General Crimes Unit. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin Grossinger is in charge of the prosecution.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) are investigating the incident.
Garcia was presented before U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert W. Lehrburger this afternoon.
