MINNEAPOLIS, MN – A routine traffic stop on Lyndale Avenue North turned up a deadly payload, landing 39-year-old John Lee Jones a decade behind bars. Jones, a convicted felon, was sentenced yesterday to 120 months in federal prison for possession of fentanyl with intent to distribute, U.S. Attorney Andrew M. Luger announced.
The bust unfolded June 22, 2022, when officers spotted firearms in plain view inside a vehicle. A search revealed not one, but two firearms, alongside a stash of cocaine and fentanyl pills. Jones, riding shotgun, readily admitted the drugs and weapons were his, claiming he’d acquired them during a recent “lick” – street slang for a drug run – just days prior.
Federal prosecutors didn’t waste time. Jones faced charges of fentanyl trafficking, a crime that carries significant penalties given the potency and deadly consequences of the synthetic opioid. The investigation, spearheaded by the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office Violent Offender Task Force, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and the Minneapolis Police Department, moved swiftly to secure the conviction.
Judge Joan N. Ericksen handed down the ten-year sentence in U.S. District Court, a clear message that trafficking fentanyl in Minneapolis – a city already grappling with a devastating overdose crisis – won’t be tolerated. The case highlights the ongoing collaboration between local and federal agencies to stem the flow of illicit drugs into the region.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Samantha H. Bates led the prosecution, meticulously building a case based on the evidence seized during the traffic stop and Jones’ own admission. While a decade in prison won’t undo the harm Jones’ actions could have caused, authorities hope it disrupts further fentanyl distribution within the city.
The ATF’s St. Paul Field Division played a key role in the investigation, providing crucial resources and expertise in firearms tracing and narcotics enforcement. This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangerous intersection between illegal guns and the deadly fentanyl trade, a combination that continues to plague communities nationwide.
