Kansas Man Guilty of Heinous Carjacking
A Kansas City, Kan., man has pleaded guilty to a federal charge of carjacking and using a firearm in furtherance of the crime.
John Michael Devosha, 25, admitted to pushing a woman out of her car and driving off with her vehicle after breaking her window with a gun handle.
The incident occurred on October 22, 2013, when Devosha was already under federal indictment in another case. He had wrecked a stolen pickup truck near 59th and Leavenworth Road in Kansas City, Kan., and fled on foot in search of another car.
The woman, who was driving a 2002 Cadillac Deville, was stopped in traffic congestion caused by the wreck. Devosha used the handle of his gun to break her front passenger window and enter her car. He pointed a gun at the woman and told her to drive away fast, before pushing her out of the driver’s side door and onto the road.
He then drove away in her car, but was arrested three days later in Jackson County, Kan., after a 45-mile high-speed chase on U.S. Highway 75.
Devosha pleaded guilty to one count of carjacking and one count of using a firearm in furtherance of carjacking. Sentencing is set for November 2, 2015, and both parties have agreed to recommend a sentence of 180 months to run consecutively to a 10-year sentence in the previous federal case.
U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom commended the Pottawatomie Tribal Police, the Kansas City, Kan., Police Department, the Bureau Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Erin Tomasic, as well as agencies that participated in the arrest.
The case is a stark reminder of the dangers of carjacking and the importance of vigilance when stopped in traffic.
