DULUTH, MN – John Robert Rieck, 66, is facing a barrage of federal charges after authorities caught him twice dealing methamphetamine and stockpiling illegal firearms. The seven-count indictment, unsealed this week, paints a picture of a repeat offender brazenly flouting the law.
The first bust came May 7, 2022, when investigators discovered Rieck in possession of over 50 grams of methamphetamine and a Bersa .380 caliber pistol. But instead of laying low, Rieck allegedly doubled down. Months later, authorities found him with a significantly larger stash – more than 500 grams of methamphetamine – along with a particularly dangerous weapon: an unregistered short-barreled shotgun stripped of its serial number, making it untraceable.
Rieck’s criminal history dates back to 1975, racking up multiple felony convictions that permanently disqualify him from owning firearms or ammunition under federal law. Yet, he was allegedly peddling drugs and possessing weapons anyway. The indictment details two counts of possessing a firearm as a felon, two counts of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, two counts of possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking offense, and one count of possession of an unregistered short-barreled shotgun.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), working alongside the Duluth Police Department, spearheaded the investigation. Sources within the ATF tell Grimy Times that Rieck was a known quantity, and the investigation was a focused effort to disrupt his ongoing criminal activity. The bust highlights the continued flow of illegal drugs and weapons into northern Minnesota.
Rieck made his initial appearance in U.S. District Court on January 11, 2023, before Magistrate Judge Leo I. Brisbois. He remains in custody pending further court proceedings. Assistant U.S. Attorney Lauren Roso is prosecuting the case, and a conviction could mean a significant prison sentence for the 66-year-old.
It’s crucial to remember that an indictment is simply an accusation. Rieck is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. However, the evidence presented thus far suggests a clear pattern of criminal behavior and a blatant disregard for the law. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as it unfolds.
