Woman Sentenced for Role in Bank Heist

In a brazen daylight robbery, 26-year-old Erica Lea Reeves was sentenced to 19 months in federal prison for her role in the theft of $5,770 from the Citizens Bank in Hutchinson, Minnesota.

According to court documents, Reeves, who has no known residence, pleaded guilty on November 7, 2012, to aiding and abetting bank robbery. Her co-defendant, Eric Andrew Ebbers, 25, was also indicted and pleaded guilty to the same crime.

The heist took place on July 17, 2012, when Ebbers, armed with a note demanding money and claiming to have a gun, entered the bank and made off with the cash. Reeves, who was driving a waiting car, sped away with Ebbers, weaving through traffic and evading police at speeds of over 100 mph.

After a high-speed chase, the car was disabled, and Reeves was arrested. Ebbers fled on foot into a nearby cornfield and was apprehended the following day.

Reeves’ co-defendant, Ebbers, was sentenced to 71 months in federal prison on February 14, 2013, for his role in the robbery. Ebbers also admitted to robbing two other banks, the Alliance Bank in Lake City, Minnesota, and the Key Bank in Gresham, Oregon.

The case was the result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the McLeod County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Calhoun-Lopez prosecuted the case.

Reeves’ sentence is the latest in a string of high-profile bank robberies in the region. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this story and provide updates as more information becomes available.
