Gift Card Scandal Rocks Birmingham
A shocking case of postal corruption has come to light in Birmingham, Alabama, as a U.S. Postal Service employee has been charged with stealing gift cards from the mail. Terrill Chatman, 48, of Birmingham, was indicted by a federal grand jury on Wednesday for the theft of mail by a Postal Service employee.
According to the indictment, Chatman stole a $50 Publix gift card from the mail in Birmingham in September 2015, and the next month stole a $10 Walmart gift card. The two-count indictment filed in U.S. District Court charges Chatman with the theft of mail by a Postal Service employee in September and October of 2015.
The maximum penalty for theft of mail by a Postal Service employee is five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. The Postal Service Office of Inspector General investigated the case, which Assistant U.S. Attorney Davis Barlow is prosecuting.
An indictment contains only charges, and a defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. Chatman’s alleged actions raise serious concerns about the integrity of the U.S. Postal Service and the trust placed in its employees.
The investigation into Chatman’s actions is ongoing, and it remains to be seen what other consequences he may face. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of holding public officials accountable for their actions.
In a statement, U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance and Special Agent in Charge Maximo Eamiguel, Southern Area Field Office, United States Postal Service, Office of Inspector General, emphasized the severity of the charges and the need for accountability within the Postal Service.
The people of Birmingham and surrounding areas deserve to trust their postal service employees to handle their mail with care. We will continue to follow this case and provide updates as more information becomes available.
