John T. Hines, a 50-year-old Swanville resident, is facing up to 10 years behind bars after pleading guilty to violating federal firearms law in the state of Maine.

According to court records and evidence presented at a trial in April 2013, two Waldo County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a neighbor’s complaint of hearing gunfire coming from Hines’ property and found the defendant in possession of a loaded .357 Ruger revolver, two rifles, and a shotgun.

Hines’ possession of these firearms is a serious offense, as he was previously convicted of domestic violence assault, a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, which prohibited him from owning any firearms under federal law.

The investigation into Hines’ firearms possession was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office. The U.S. Probation Office will prepare a presentence investigation report before Hines is sentenced.

Hines faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine. His sentencing will be determined after the completion of the presentence investigation report.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jim Moore can be contacted at (207) 945-0373 for further information regarding this case.
