John Van Vught, Wire Fraud, Vermont 2023

Burlington, Vermont – In a shocking display of deceit, 72-year-old John Van Vught of Northfield, Vermont, has been arrested and charged with $560,000 wire fraud. The alleged embezzlement, which took place between 2010 and July 2022, occurred while Van Vught performed contract accounting work for ValleyNet, a non-profit operating in the Upper Valley.

According to court records, Van Vught transferred $560,000 out of ValleyNet’s accounts into his personal bank account. To cover his tracks, Van Vught underreported the income ValleyNet received according to his accounting submissions. Furthermore, Van Vught obfuscated his possession of the embezzled funds by purchasing properties in Georgia and Florida.

The United States Attorney’s Office emphasized that an indictment contains allegations only and that Van Vught remains presumed innocent until and unless he is convicted of a crime. Van Vught faces a maximum sentence of 20 years of imprisonment on each wire fraud count, with the actual sentence to be determined by the United States Sentencing Guidelines.

Van Vught was arrested on Friday, May 12, 2023, in Brunswick, Georgia, and is expected to have his initial appearance later today before a United States Magistrate Judge in Brunswick, Georgia.

Assistant United States Attorney Jonathan A. Ophardt is handling the case, with United States Attorney Nikolas P. Kerest commending the investigatory efforts of Special Agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Van Vught has not yet retained or been appointed counsel. As the investigation unfolds, one thing is clear: John Van Vught is facing serious charges for his alleged involvement in a massive wire fraud scheme.
