Johnathan D. Long, Methamphetamine and Firearm Trafficking, Illinois 2018

Johnathan D. Long, 41, of Johnston City, Illinois, is headed to federal prison after being sentenced on methamphetamine and firearm charges tied to a high-purity ice trafficking ring that operated in Williamson County. On March 8, 2018, Long received a 144-month prison term, followed by four years of supervised release, after pleading guilty to conspiracy to distribute over 50 grams of methamphetamine, actual distribution of the drug, and carrying a firearm during a drug trafficking offense.

The crimes unfolded between December 2016 and January 23, 2017, with Long and co-defendant Julian Rodriguez running a steady operation that pushed ice—methamphetamine with at least 80% purity—into the local drug market. Evidence presented during plea and sentencing hearings confirmed Long’s central role in the distribution network, including a controlled sale on January 20, 2017, when he sold ice to a confidential law enforcement source—all while armed.

That sale set in motion a search warrant executed at Long and Rodriguez’s Johnson City residence. Federal agents found multiple firearms, more than 200 grams of ice, quantities of cannabis, and a large stash of U.S. currency. The haul confirmed what investigators had long suspected: this was not casual dealing, but a calculated, armed drug enterprise.

At sentencing, U.S. District Court determined Long was responsible for distributing approximately 907 grams of ice. The judge applied a sentencing enhancement for maintaining a residence for drug distribution—a legal strike that underscored the operation’s brazen nature. Long’s actions, the court ruled, endangered the entire community.

Long’s co-conspirator, Julian Rodriguez, already paid a steeper price, sentenced earlier to 188 months in federal prison for his role in the same offenses. The tandem prosecutions dismantled a key node in Southern Illinois’s underground drug trade, according to federal prosecutors.

The case was led by the Southern Illinois Enforcement Group and the Drug Enforcement Administration, with support from the Williamson County State’s Attorney’s Office. U.S. Attorney Donald S. Boyce emphasized the federal commitment to targeting drug traffickers who arm themselves, stating, ‘When drugs and guns mix, communities pay the price.’ Long will serve his sentence in a federal facility, with no early release.
