SIOUX FALLS, SD – The flow of poison into South Dakota hit a snag this week as two women involved in a cross-state methamphetamine distribution network received federal prison sentences. Catherine Hamilton, 55, of Mitchell, SD, and Christine Hughes, 66, of North Jackson, OH, were both sentenced after pleading guilty to Conspiracy to Distribute a Controlled Substance.
U.S. District Chief Judge Roberto A. Lange handed down the harsher sentence to Hamilton on April 7, 2025: 57 months in federal prison, followed by 3 years of supervised release. She was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Hughes received 37 months in prison, also with 3 years of supervised release, and the same $100 assessment, sentenced August 25, 2025. Both women were immediately taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service.
The pair were first indicted by a federal grand jury in April 2024, but it took months for them to face the music. Hamilton entered a guilty plea on January 27, 2025, while Hughes held out until May 27, 2025. Court documents paint a clear picture: Hughes was shipping packages of methamphetamine to Hamilton via the United States Postal Service, turning the mail system into a drug delivery service.
Hamilton, in turn, wasn’t holding onto the drugs for personal use. She was distributing the methamphetamine to others within South Dakota, effectively acting as a local distributor for Hughes’ operation. The details suggest a calculated effort to profit from the misery of others, preying on addiction for financial gain. Investigators confirmed the pair were systematically moving product across state lines.
The investigation, spearheaded by the United States Postal Inspection Service and the Mitchell Police Department, reveals the lengths to which drug traffickers will go to evade law enforcement. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Joyce skillfully prosecuted the case, bringing the pair to justice. This wasn’t a small-time operation; it was a coordinated effort to flood South Dakota with a dangerous and destructive drug.
While these sentences offer a temporary reprieve, the demand for methamphetamine continues to fuel the criminal underworld. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the ongoing fight against drug trafficking in South Dakota and beyond. The fact remains: as long as there’s a market, there will be those willing to poison communities for profit.
