Jonathan Allen Mowery, 36, of Harman, West Virginia, has admitted to distributing methamphetamine in Randolph County, confirming his role in a March 2017 drug deal that triggered a federal investigation. The guilty plea was announced by United States Attorney Bill Powell, marking a major strike in the ongoing battle against synthetic drug trafficking in rural Appalachia.
Mowery pled guilty to one count of “Possession with Intent to Distribute Methamphetamine,” specifically admitting to dealing the potent stimulant known on the streets as “ice.” The transaction occurred in Randolph County, a region long plagued by opioid and meth abuse, where law enforcement has intensified efforts to dismantle local distribution networks.
The charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison and a fine of up to $1,000,000. While the statutory maximum is severe, the actual sentence will be determined under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, weighing the seriousness of the offense and Mowery’s prior criminal history, if any.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms, Tobacco and Explosives (ATF) and the Mountain Region Drug & Violent Crime Task Force, whose joint operations have targeted high-risk offenders across West Virginia. Funding and coordination came through the federal Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force Program (OCDETF), a nationwide initiative aimed at dismantling major drug trafficking organizations.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen D. Warner is prosecuting the case, underscoring the federal government’s commitment to cracking down on meth distribution in underserved regions. U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael John Aloi presided over the proceeding, with sentencing scheduled for a later date.
This conviction sends a clear message: even small-scale distributors are now in the federal crosshairs. In the shadow hills of West Virginia, where ice fuels addiction and crime, Mowery’s guilty plea is one more notch in the belt of a justice system grinding toward accountability.
