Defendant’s Hand in July 2021 Death of Innocent Bystander Caught in the Crossfire of Gun Battle
WASHINGTON – In a shocking turn of events, Jonathan Brown, a 31-year-old Washington D.C. resident, has been sentenced to 180 months in federal prison for his involvement in a brutal shootout that claimed the life of an innocent bystander, Kervin Sanches, in July 2021. The sentencing was handed down by U.S. District Court Judge Reggie B. Walton, who also ordered Brown to serve four years of supervised release.
The tragic incident occurred on July 31, 2021, at approximately 11:20 p.m. when Brown, aka ‘Tsunami,’ fired a loaded firearm in the area of 7th and O Streets, NW, sparking a gun battle with an unidentified gunman. Sanches, a respected dean of students at a local charter school, was caught in the crossfire and tragically lost his life.
According to court documents, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and FBI’s Washington Field Office began investigating violent crime and drug trafficking activities in the area in late 2021. The investigation revealed that Brown was a key player in a drug trafficking conspiracy that distributed crack cocaine in Northwest Washington D.C. The group’s activities were centered around the corner of 7th and O Streets, NW, where the fatal shootout took place.
During the investigation, law enforcement recovered hundreds of grams of cocaine base and fentanyl from the group, and undercover officers purchased the controlled substances from Brown and his associates. The evidence gathered led to Brown’s guilty plea on June 17 for conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute cocaine base and voluntary manslaughter while armed.
Brown’s 180-month sentence will run consecutive to a 51-month sentence he received in March 2024 for unlawful possession of ammunition by a prohibited person. The case was investigated by the MPD and the FBI’s Washington Field Office, and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Kevin Rosenberg, Solomon Eppel, and Erin DeRiso of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia.
The sentencing of Jonathan Brown serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of gun violence and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions. The community is still grappling with the loss of Kervin Sanches, a beloved figure who left behind a lasting impact on the lives of many.
