Assault Conviction Lands Gallup Man in Federal Prison
A disturbing case of domestic violence has come to a close in federal court, with a Navajo man from Gallup being sentenced to six months in prison for his role in a brutal assault on a Navajo woman last year.
Jonathan Dan Clyde, 36, was arrested in February 2017 and charged with assault resulting in serious bodily injury following a violent altercation on the Navajo Indian Reservation in McKinley County, New Mexico.
According to court documents, Clyde assaulted the victim by pushing her to the floor, kicking and punching her in the face, slamming her face into the floor, choking her, and kicking her left arm. The victim was rushed to the hospital via medevac airplane due to the severity of her injuries.
Clyde pleaded guilty to the assault charge on March 3, 2017, and was subsequently sentenced to six months in prison followed by three years of supervised release. The case was investigated by the Crownpoint office of the Navajo Nation Department of Public Safety and prosecuted by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Lucy B. Solimon.
The case was brought under the Tribal Special Assistant U.S. Attorney (Tribal SAUSA) Pilot Project, a program sponsored by the Justice Department’s Office on Violence Against Women under a grant administered by the Pueblo of Laguna. The project aims to increase the likelihood that every viable violent offense against Native women is prosecuted in either federal court or tribal court, or both.
The sentencing serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing issue of violence against Native women in the United States. The Tribal SAUSA Pilot Project is one step in the Justice Department’s ongoing efforts to increase engagement, coordination, and action on public safety in tribal communities.
