Jonathan Davis, Fentanyl Distribution, Iowa 2023

A Chicago man has been sentenced to over 10 years in federal prison for his role in distributing fentanyl that led to multiple overdose deaths in Iowa.

Jonathan Davis, 30, of Chicago, Illinois, pleaded guilty on January 23, 2023, to conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance. The evidence presented at the sentencing hearing revealed that law enforcement had conducted a series of controlled buys of purported heroin from Melvin Williams, using a confidential source or undercover officer.

During these controlled buys, Davis provided Williams with fentanyl, which Williams then distributed to the confidential source or undercover officer. In a tragic turn of events, Davis’s actions led to multiple overdose deaths in Iowa. In late March 2022, Davis distributed fentanyl to Williams, who in turn distributed it to another person, causing the person to suffer an overdose and die.

In early April 2022, Williams distributed fentanyl he had received from Davis to Justin Jensen, who then distributed it to another person, resulting in an overdose and a car crash on a highway in Waterloo.

On May 26, 2022, law enforcement officers searched a vehicle associated with Davis and found 200.59 grams of fentanyl.

Davis was sentenced to 130 months’ imprisonment by United States District Court Judge C.J. Williams in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He will also serve a 5-year term of supervised release after completing his prison term.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Dillan Edwards and Special Assistant United States Attorney Adam J. Vander Stoep and was investigated as part of the Northern Iowa Heroin Initiative and the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) program.

The victims of Davis’s actions will never be forgotten, and this sentence serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences of fentanyl distribution. We hope that this sentence brings some measure of justice to their families.
