Jonathan Lee Eubanks, Data Destruction and Credit Card Fraud, Florida 2017

A former private security company employee has been sentenced to 7 years in prison for intentionally destroying data and committing credit card fraud.

Jonathan Lee Eubanks, a 29-year-old former Davie resident, was convicted of intentionally causing damage to a protected computer without authorization, access device fraud, and three counts of aggravated identity theft in April 2017.

Eubanks accessed his former employer’s computer system without authorization, using remote access software installed on a co-worker’s computer, and deleted all files on a server, including databases of client and employee information.

He also redirected the company’s website to a competing security firm’s website and sent multiple emails to employees and clients disparaging the company.

In addition to the data destruction, Eubanks used a former co-worker’s email account to send emails in that person’s name, and he used credit card numbers obtained from another company to make online purchases of rifle scopes, survivalist gear, and electronics.

Senior United States District Judge James I. Cohn sentenced Eubanks to a total of 84 months in prison, consisting of 60 months for intentionally damaging a protected computer and access device fraud, followed by a consecutive term of 24 months in prison for aggravated identity theft.

The sentence was handed down in the Southern District of Florida. Acting U.S. Attorney Benjamin G. Greenberg commended the investigative efforts of the FBI in this matter.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jared M. Strauss and Trial Attorney Louisa K. Marion prosecuted this case.
