Crime Rocks Puerto Rico: Defendant Sentenced to 560 Months in Prison

Río Piedras, PR – A heinous crime has shaken the community in Río Piedras, Puerto Rico. Jonathan Ortiz-Torres, 32, was sentenced to 560 months in prison for the robbery and murder of two Department of Natural Resources Rangers in March 2010.

According to law enforcement, Ortiz-Torres, along with co-defendants Ángel Santana-Espinet and Leroy Santana-Rosado, committed the crimes on March 23, 2010. The defendants, armed with a .9mm caliber Smith and Wesson Pistol, took the lives of Rangers Félix Rodríguez Gómez and Kenneth Omar Betancourt, who were acting as security guards at Reparto Industrial.

The defendants fled the scene but were later apprehended by PRPD agents after a high-speed chase. Ortiz-Torres was charged with interference of commerce by robbery, possession of a stolen firearm, and use of a stolen firearm.

Ortiz-Torres pled guilty on May 27, 2014, to the charges. His co-defendant, Ángel Santana-Espinet, was sentenced to 380 months in prison and eight years of supervised release after pleading guilty on August 21, 2012. Leroy Santana-Rosado was sentenced to 87 months in prison and three years of supervised release after pleading guilty on March 24, 2014.

The case was investigated by the FBI and the Puerto Rico Police Department, with assistance from the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Puerto Rico. Assistant US Attorney Julia Díaz-Rex prosecuted the case.

Ortiz-Torres’ sentence of 560 months in prison and five years of supervised release serves as a reminder of the severity of the crimes committed. His actions have left a lasting impact on the community and the families of the victims.

In related news, the community is coming together to honor the memories of the fallen Rangers. A memorial service will be held in their honor, and donations are being accepted to support the families of the victims.
