Jonathan Smith, Defrauding Wood County Federal Credit Union, West Virginia 2021

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Jonathan Smith, 35, of Parkersburg, West Virginia, has admitted to a brazen scheme to defraud Wood County Federal Credit Union out of $505,000. Smith pleaded guilty today, setting the stage for a potential 30-year prison sentence.

Court records reveal Smith secured the loan in June 2016 by systematically lying on his application. He inflated his monthly income and falsely claimed ownership of M&J Towing, a fabrication designed to paint a picture of financial stability he didn’t possess. The deception didn’t stop there.

Smith further misled the credit union by claiming the $505,000 would be used to purchase a 1963 Corvette valued at $1.2 million. This was a blatant lie. Smith had already purchased the vehicle for a mere $35,000, and its actual fair market value was estimated at less than $50,000. He used the inflated value to justify the loan amount, effectively swindling the financial institution.

The U.S. Secret Service spearheaded the investigation, uncovering the layers of deceit. Acting United States Attorney Lisa G. Johnston praised the agency’s work in bringing Smith to justice. This case highlights the Secret Service’s expanding role in combating financial crimes beyond their traditional mandate.

Senior United States District Judge John T. Copenhaver, Jr., presided over the hearing. Assistant United States Attorney Christopher Arthur is prosecuting the case. Smith is scheduled to be sentenced on December 8, 2021. At that time, Judge Copenhaver will determine the appropriate punishment, with a maximum sentence of 30 years behind bars.

This isn’t just about a classic car and a bad loan; it’s a calculated attempt to steal from a local credit union and a stark reminder that financial fraud carries serious consequences.
