High-End Car Dealership Employee Sentenced for Tax Fraud
A New York man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for failing to report over $1.6 million in income on his federal income tax returns that he embezzled from his employer.
Jooyeong Lee, 46, of Westbury, New York, pleaded guilty to filing a false federal income tax return in U.S. District Court in Newark, New Jersey.
According to court documents, Lee embezzled over $1.6 million from various high-end car dealerships in New Jersey where he worked between 2015 and 2021. When he filed his tax returns, Lee failed to report or pay tax on the funds as income, causing a tax loss of $494,082 over seven years.
Lee’s sentence was imposed by U.S. District Judge Katharine S. Hayden in Newark federal court on February 26, 2026.
The investigation that led to Lee’s sentencing was conducted by special agents of the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Jenifer Piovesan in Newark.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Casey S. Smith of the Criminal Division in Newark.
Lee’s defense counsel is Jason A. Seidman, Esq.
