Former Professor Sentenced to 97 Months in Prison for Human Smuggling and Sex Crimes in New York
A former professor has been sentenced to 97 months in prison for smuggling three female victims from El Salvador and sexually abusing them in New York.
According to court documents, Jorge Alberto Ramos, 45, of the Bronx, New York, smuggled three victims from El Salvador to the Bronx, where he raped, sexually assaulted, and sexually abused them over the course of a decade.
Ramos, a former professor, groomed the victims by expressing concern for them and their families and by sending them gifts and money. He then arranged for each of the victims to be smuggled into the U.S., including by paying fees for smugglers to transport them across the southern U.S. border.
Once in the U.S., Ramos brought each of the victims to his residence in the Bronx, where he raped and sexually assaulted them. The victims were kept isolated and were threatened with deportation if they did not comply with Ramos’s demands.
After Ramos was arrested, law enforcement agents seized a desktop computer from his residence and discovered multiple photographs and videos containing known child pornography.
Ramos was sentenced to 97 months in prison and five years of supervised release. U.S. Attorney Danielle R. Sassoon praised the investigative work of U.S. Department of Homeland Security – Homeland Security Investigations and the New York City Police Department.
