Jorge Calderon-Campos, Cockfighting, California 2022

BAKERSFIELD, CA – A brutal underground world of animal cruelty and illegal gambling has been exposed in Bakersfield, with two men now facing federal charges. Jorge Calderon-Campos, 41, and Horacio Ortega-Martinez, 35, both Mexican nationals residing in the city, are accused of running a large-scale cockfighting operation, according to a U.S. Attorney’s Office announcement.

The feds say Calderon-Campos and Ortega-Martinez weren’t just spectators; they were actively involved in organizing and facilitating the bloodsport. Court documents reveal frequent communication between the two throughout February 2022 discussing upcoming cockfights, including a particularly savage event on February 12th where fifteen roosters battled for a $5,000 purse. The details paint a picture of a calculated, profit-driven enterprise built on animal suffering.

On April 26, 2022, law enforcement descended upon Ortega-Martinez’s residence, uncovering a horrifying scene. Authorities seized approximately 250 roosters, along with 250 “gaffs” – razor-sharp steel blades strapped to the birds’ legs to maximize injury during fights. Training equipment and a stockpile of antibiotics, vitamins, and supplements commonly used to condition roosters for brutal combat were also found. It was a full-scale operation, geared towards maximizing the birds’ fighting capacity, and therefore, the ring’s profits.

This wasn’t an isolated incident. Calderon-Campos and Ortega-Martinez were arrested alongside six other Kern County residents who are facing separate charges in a related indictment – drug trafficking. The bust indicates a potential link between the cockfighting ring and illicit drug distribution, suggesting a complex web of criminal activity operating in the area. The multi-agency investigation is a clear sign the feds are cracking down on intertwined criminal enterprises.

The investigation was a massive undertaking, involving Homeland Security Investigations, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Kern County Sheriff’s Office, the Kern County High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area, the U.S. Marshals Service, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the Bakersfield Police Department, the Kern County Probation Department, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, the U.S. Secret Service, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Office of Inspector General and the California Highway Patrol. Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher D. Baker is leading the prosecution.

If convicted, both Calderon-Campos and Ortega-Martinez face a statutory maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. However, sentencing will be determined by the court, taking into account federal guidelines and other relevant factors. It’s important to remember these are allegations, and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. But the evidence uncovered suggests a cruel and illegal operation that has finally met with law enforcement intervention.
