New Orleans, LA – A Houston man has pleaded guilty to possessing with intent to distribute three kilograms of fentanyl, a highly addictive synthetic opioid.
Jorge Isaac Gonzalez-Medina, 31, of Houston, Texas, entered a guilty plea before United States District Judge Jane Triche Milazzo, announced U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans.
According to court records, Gonzalez-Medina admitted to possessing with the intent to distribute over 400 grams of fentanyl, in violation of Title 21 U.S.C. § 841(a)(1) and 841(b)(1)(A).
The defendant also admitted to being stopped in a vehicle with three kilograms of fentanyl hidden in the rear axle. This alarming discovery highlights the ongoing threat of fentanyl trafficking in our region.
Gonzalez-Medina faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years, up to life imprisonment, a fine of up to $10,000,000, and at least 5 years of supervised release. The count also carries a mandatory special assessment fee of $100.
This case is being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant United States Attorney David Haller of the Violent Crime Unit is in charge of the prosecution.
Sentencing is set for November 29, 2023. The community can rest assured that those who engage in these heinous crimes will be held accountable for their actions.
