Jose Caban, Attempted Murder, New York 2021

A Bronx gang member has been sentenced to 21 years in prison for his role in two separate attempted murders, including one that paralyzed an 18-year-old victim and another that sent bystanders, including children, running for their lives on a crowded street.

Jose Caban, a 23-year-old member of the Jack Boyz, a criminal enterprise involved in committing numerous acts of violence, including shootings, in and around the Bronx, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Valerie E. Caproni on Monday.

According to the Superseding Indictment and the evidence at trial, Caban helped another member of the Jack Boyz attempt to murder a rival on June 19, 2018, near East 136th Street and Willis Avenue in the Bronx. The victim was shot in the spine and paralyzed from the chest down.

Just a few months later, on February 8, 2019, Caban fired a gun five times on a crowded street in the Bronx, including near East 135th Street and Willis Avenue, in an attempt to murder a rival. The shooting sent bystanders, including children, running for their lives.

“Today, Jose Caban was rightly sentenced to decades of imprisonment for participating in two shootings that paralyzed an 18-year-old victim and sent people, including children, running for their lives on a crowded street,” said U.S. Attorney Damian Williams. “We will continue to hold accountable those who plague our communities with senseless gun violence.”

Caban was convicted in October 2021 after a jury trial. In addition to his prison term, he was sentenced to five years of supervised release.

The investigation into Caban’s crimes was led by the New York City Police Department and Homeland Security Investigations. The case is being handled by the Office’s Violent and Organized Crime Unit, with Assistant United States Attorneys Lindsey Keenan, Justin V. Rodriguez, and Jamie E. Bagliebter in charge of the prosecution.
