Four Aliens Charged with Illegal Re-Entry in Pennsylvania
HARRISBURG – In a shocking turn of events, four previously deported aliens have been indicted for illegal re-entry into the United States by a previously deported alien.
A federal grand jury in the Middle District of Pennsylvania returned separate indictments against Jose Coronado-Garcia, 36, Jesus Vergara-Ponce, 35, Alix Masias-Serrano, 43, and Antonio Mendez-Garcia, 52, all of Mexico and Honduras.
According to United States Attorney Bruce D. Brandler, Coronado-Garcia was previously deported from the United States to Mexico on four prior occasions, March 16, 2009, March 20, 2009, May 30, 2011, and December 25, 2015. He is alleged to have illegally re-entered the United States sometime after December 2015, and was found in the United States in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania after eluding examination or inspection by immigration officers.
Vergara-Ponce, on the other hand, was previously deported from the United States to Mexico in January 2000. He is alleged to have illegally re-entered the United States sometime after January 2000, and was found in the United States in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania after eluding examination or inspection by immigration officers.
Masias-Serrano was previously deported from the United States to Honduras in August 2008 and February 2009. He is alleged to have illegally re-entered the United States sometime after February 2009, and was found in the United States in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania after eluding examination or inspection by immigration officers.
Mendez-Garcia, the most egregious offender, was previously deported from the United States to Mexico on five occasions, April 2003, March 2006, December 2006, June 2007, and August 2010. He is alleged to have illegally re-entered the United States sometime after August 2010, and was found in the United States in Franklin County, Pennsylvania after eluding examination or inspection by immigration officers. In August 2010, he was convicted in the Middle District of Pennsylvania of illegal reentry by a previously deported alien, an offense which subjects him to enhanced penalties in the current case.
Under federal law, Coronado-Garcia, Vergara-Ponce, and Masias-Serrano face a maximum penalty of two years of imprisonment, a term of supervised release following imprisonment, and a fine. Mendez-Garcia, on the other hand, faces a maximum penalty of ten years of imprisonment, a term of supervised release following imprisonment, and a fine, due to his previous conviction.
The matter was investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO). Prosecution has been assigned to Special Assistant United States Attorney Brian G. McDonnell.
