Man Pleads Guilty to Reentering US Illegally for Sixth Time

LAFAYETTE, La. – Jose Luis Gamez-Verdugo, a 49-year-old man from Mexico, has pleaded guilty to reentering the United States illegally, marking his sixth time being found in the country without proper documentation.

According to a recent guilty plea, Gamez-Verdugo was found by authorities on April 9, 2017 in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana. Further investigation revealed that he had been removed from the United States five previous occasions, with the most recent removal occurring on June 16, 2011 in Brownsville, Texas.

Gamez-Verdugo faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine. The court has set a sentencing date for November 3, 2017.

The investigation into Gamez-Verdugo’s case was conducted by the United States Immigrations and Customs Enforcement and the Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney T. Forrest Phillips is responsible for prosecuting the case.

As part of the plea agreement, Gamez-Verdugo’s guilty plea will be finalized when accepted by U.S. District Judge Dee D. Drell.
