Iowa Man Pleads Guilty to Armed Bank Robbery in New Jersey
NEWARK, N.J. – In a shocking turn of events, Jose Luis Martinez, 32, pleaded guilty to robbing a bank in Secaucus, New Jersey, in January 2017.
According to the evidence presented in court, Martinez walked into the bank on Jan. 5, 2017, and pointed a handgun at a bank employee while demanding cash. Martinez threatened to shoot the employee and other customers if they did not comply with his demands.
As a result of the armed bank robbery, Martinez faces a maximum potential penalty of 25 years in prison and a maximum fine of $250,000. Additionally, the brandishing a firearm count carries a maximum potential penalty of life in prison and a mandatory minimum sentence of seven years, which must be served consecutively to any other sentence imposed.
The investigation into the bank robbery was led by the FBI, with assistance from the White Plains, New York, Office of the FBI; the New York City Police Department; the Greenwich, Connecticut, Police Department; and the Port Chester, New York, Police Department.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Garrett Schuman of the General Crimes Unit in Newark represented the government in the case.
Sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 31, 2023, where Martinez will face the consequences of his actions.
The case serves as a reminder of the severe consequences of committing violent crimes, and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.
