A Reading area man has been sentenced to serve 10 years in prison for his role in a major drug trafficking conspiracy in the Schuylkill and Berks County area.
Jose Luis Sandoval-Martinez, a 35-year-old Mexican national, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute more than five kilograms of cocaine and more than 500 grams of methamphetamine.
The drug conspiracy operated between August and November 2011, and Sandoval-Martinez was indicted by a federal grand jury in November 2011, as a result of an investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration.
According to United States Attorney Peter J. Smith, Sandoval-Martinez’s sentencing marks the end of a long and complex investigation into a major drug trafficking organization in the area.
At his sentencing, Senior U.S. District Court Judge A. Richard Caputo ordered Sandoval-Martinez to serve 10 years in prison, and also placed him on five years of supervised release after serving his prison sentence. In addition, Sandoval-Martinez was ordered to pay a $100 special assessment.
Sandoval-Martinez’s conviction also means that he faces possible deportation as a result of his conviction.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Francis P. Sempa.
The sentencing of Sandoval-Martinez serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat drug trafficking in the area.
