A 52-year-old Mexican national, Jose Manuel Perez, has pleaded guilty to his role in a two-year, multimillion-dollar trade-based money laundering conspiracy.
Perez admitted to moving drug trafficking proceeds through El Paso, Texas to Mexico as part of a Black Market Peso Exchange scheme.
The scheme, which lasted from 2021 to 2023, involved the exchange of cash for pesos, allowing drug traffickers to launder their profits.
According to court documents, Perez’s role in the scheme resulted in the laundering of millions of dollars in cash.
Perez pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering, a charge that carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
As part of his plea agreement, Perez has agreed to cooperate with law enforcement and provide information about his involvement in the scheme.
The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Texas.
Perez is set to be sentenced on June 15, 2024 and faces a maximum of 20 years in prison.
