Companies Busted for Solar Panel Scam, Texas 2024

A major crackdown on companies selling solar panel systems in Texas has been launched by Attorney General Ken Paxton, targeting companies accused of engaging in widespread fraud and deceptive marketing practices.

As part of the initiative, Attorney General Paxton has issued Civil Investigative Demands (“CIDs”) to a number of companies, including Freedom Forever, LLC (“Freedom Solar”), SunRun, Inc. (“Sunrun”), Lone Star Solar Services LLC (“Lone Star Solar”), and CAM Solar Inc. (“CAM Solar”).

The companies are accused of violating the Deceptive Trade Practices-Consumer Protection Act, with over 100 complaints filed with the OAG against these companies, along with thousands more online. The investigation centers around misrepresentations regarding savings for consumers on their energy bills, the efficacy of their solar panel systems, equipment implementations, as well as the companies’ terms and policies.

“Thousands of Texans have been targeted by companies selling solar panel systems, and it’s imperative that these companies are held responsible for any lies or deceptive marketing they use,” said Attorney General Paxton.

The CIDs require the companies to disclose documents regarding how they track changes to electricity bills for consumers using their systems to determine savings, warranties, service plans, marketing materials, and contract information.

Attorney General Paxton warned that his office will take legal action against any corporations breaking the law and scamming Texans.

This is only the beginning of the crackdown, and more companies may be targeted as the investigation unfolds.

The Texas Attorney General’s Office is urging consumers to report any suspicious activity or complaints about these companies to their office.

Texans who have been affected by these companies are advised to seek assistance from the Texas Attorney General’s Office or to file a complaint online.

The full extent of the investigation and the companies involved is not yet clear, but one thing is certain: Attorney General Paxton is committed to holding these companies accountable for their actions.
