A 27-year-old Mexican national, Norma Diaz, has been ordered to federal prison for her role in a multi-year conspiracy to smuggle illegal aliens for financial gain.
According to the Department of Justice, USAO, Diaz was involved in a cartel-linked conspiracy to smuggle over 1,900 aliens into the United States.
The crime occurred in Laredo, Texas, a key entry point for human traffickers and smugglers.
Diaz was arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit alien smuggling, in violation of 8 U.S.C. § 1324(a)(1)(A)(v)(I).
On March 14, 2024, Diaz pleaded guilty to the charge and was subsequently sentenced to 37 months in federal prison.
The investigation into Diaz’s activities was led by the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) with assistance from the Laredo Police Department.
Diaz’s sentence serves as a reminder of the harsh penalties for those involved in human trafficking and alien smuggling.
