Jose Mendez-Hernandez, 31, a native of Guatemala and an alien to the United States, was sentenced to 24 months in federal prison for illegal reentry, according to a recent federal court ruling.
In a decision handed down by Chief U.S. District Judge Louis Guirola, Jr. on September 13, 2017, Mendez-Hernandez was given a prison term of 24 months followed by three years of supervised release.
According to reports, Mendez-Hernandez was encountered by U.S. Immigration agents on or about February 6, 2017, in Harrison County, Mississippi. It was determined that he was an alien to the United States and was previously removed and deported from the country to Mexico in November 2006.
Mendez-Hernandez was also identified as a previously removed aggravated felon, having previously been convicted in the State of South Carolina for burglary in the 3rd degree. When found in Mississippi in February of this year, it was determined that Mendez-Hernandez was in the United States without having received the permission of the Attorney General of the United States or the Secretary of Homeland Security to re-enter the United States.
This case was investigated by Immigration Enforcement Agents for the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrea Jones.
Mendez-Hernandez, whose aliases include Eduardo Perez Reynoso, Jose Mendez, Eduardo Gumercindo Reynoso ‘P’, Jose Hernandez-Mendez, and Jose A. Mendez, will serve his prison term followed by three years of supervised release.
