JOSE RAUL MAITA, 55, a citizen of Ecuador, waived his right to be indicted and pleaded guilty today before U.S. District Judge Vernon D. Oliver in Hartford to unlawful reentry of a removed alien.
Maita, who has a history of violent and sex-related crimes, has been previously convicted of sex abuse and other offenses in the United States.
In 2024, Maita illegally re-entered the United States, a crime he committed after being twice deported from the country.
The guilty plea was announced by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Connecticut, which investigated the case.
Maita’s guilty plea is a significant victory for law enforcement and a reminder that the consequences for re-entering the United States after being deported are severe.
Maita’s sentencing is scheduled for a later date and he faces up to 2 years in prison for the crime of unlawful reentry of a removed alien.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Connecticut has a long history of fighting against human trafficking and the re-entry of deported individuals.
This case is a prime example of the office’s commitment to keeping our communities safe and holding accountable those who seek to evade our laws.
